Welcome to Diversity Essential’s 2SLGBTQIA+ Knowledge Essentials section. The following workshops are uniquely tailored or customized to fit the needs, objectives and diversity of participants. The following workshops centers the inclusion of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and all sexual and gender diverse individuals, cultures and communities.

Core Competencies Affirming Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression

This session provides the core essentials for the inclusion of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, intersex, asexual and all gender and sexual diverse individuals and their families. Conflations, assumptions, and cultural biases can impact identity formation, service delivery, and interpersonal relationships. This session can consist of the following desired learning outcomes:

  • Identify core affirming and inclusive principles
  • Acquire common terminology and its application to policy formation, service delivery and resource development
  • Explain identity formation and fluidity throughout the lifespan
  • Acquire practical applications for being more inclusive and suspend personal judgement
  • Identify how our various intersectional identities interconnect with human sexuality
Transgender and Non-Binary Inclusion: Core Competencies from Terminology to Service Delivery

As more trans, non-binary and gender diverse individuals disclose their identity, are educators, service providers and businesses prepared to respectfully, inclusively and appropriately respond? This session shares essential practices that are affirming and inclusive of transgender, gender diverse, gender non-conforming and expansive individuals and their families. This session can consist of the following desired learning outcomes:

  • Acquire core affirming and inclusive principles
  • Acquire current terminology and its application to policy, service delivery and resource development
  • Identify key social and workplace themes experienced by trans, non-binary and gender diverse individuals
  • Acquire practical applications for accessibility and inclusion while suspending personal judgment
  • Acquire key transition-planning approaches in schools or at the workplace
Intégration de la terminologie et les considérations de traduction: anglais à français / Incorporating Gender Inclusive Terminology and Translation Considerations: English to French

Au fur et à mesure que les jeunes trans et non-binaires divulguent leur identité sexuelle de plus en plus, comment utiliser le langage qui les affirment ou traduire les termes anglais à fin de capturer les nuances d’identité? Comment le corps enseignant peut-il contrer le mythe que le français est restreint dans sa capacité d’exprimer le genre de manière neutre et d’affirmer les gens de tous les sexes? Cet atelier de compétences pratiques entre une à une heure et demi présente et enseigne aux éducateurs, aux fournisseurs de services, et aux administrateurs le champ lexicale en français, ainsi que présenter de diverses approches pour la création de textes bilingues ou la traduction de l’anglais vers Français.

A la fin de l’atelier, les participants seront:

  • Acquérir et intégrer une terminologie bilingue inclusive pour les conversations de tous les jours
  • Acquérir des moyens d’inciter les étudiants à élargir leur compréhension sur la diversité des genres

Accessible and Affirming 2SLGBTQIA+ Practices in Healthcare

What is 2SLGBTQIA+ healthcare? This session is designed for those currently, or are entering the healthcare field. Participants will acquire a better understanding of the developmental and life experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and their families, and how healthcare providers can better provide accessible, affirming and inclusive practices. This session can consist of the following desired learning outcomes:

  • Acquire core affirming and inclusive principles
  • General terminology and its application to healthcare delivery and resource development
  • Identify systemic barriers specific to sexual orientation and gender identity that can compromise quality of care
  • Identify aspects of implicit bias that compromises service delivery
  • Acquire affirming and inclusive communication skills with patients/clients
  • Acquire knowledge on operationalizing and adapting inclusive practices for admission, intake, delivery, and follow up
Fostering Welcoming and Inclusive Christian Faith Communities
  • “How do I respond when our values collide?”
  • “How can I encourage my congregation to be more inclusive and welcoming?”
  • “I don’t understand why they can’t get married elsewhere.”
  • “Our traditions don’t support these people.”

These are a sampling of reactions and commonly asked questions and discussions when reconciling one’s Christian faith and the diversity of human sexuality. This session honors one’s faith journey while facilitating meaningful discussions including: centering principles and values of being welcoming to all, responding to difficult questions, reacting to the existential crisis, and fostering commonality among differences.
